Your exercise efforts are a waste if you don’t do this…

Perhaps you’re skeptical of personal trainers. You’ve had one in the past and didn’t get the results you wanted. Or you’re in the “I can do it myself” camp. You have a routine, you come in and know what you need to do. Regardless of your belief system, having a trainer will get you faster results than you can doing it on your own.

I’m reminded of Aesops fable:

A lion awakened from sleep by a mouse running over his face. Rising up angrily, he caught him and was about to kill him when the mouse piteously entreated, saying: “If you would only spare my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness.” The lion laughed at him and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong rope to the ground. The mouse, recognizing his roar, came and gnawed the rope with his teeth and set him free exclaiming:

“You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you, expecting to receive from me, any repayment of your favor; now you know that it is possible for even a mouse to con benefits on a lion.”

Now I’m not suggesting that our trainers are tiny mice, but people quickly forget the irreplaceable benefits that come with having a trainer.

When it comes to exercise, mother nature is against us because our bodies quickly adapt to exercise. We perform an exercise and that creates tiny tears in the muscles being used. In response, the body makes repairs to those muscles and strengthens the area so it can handle the demands placed on it. Then the cycle repeats itself.

This was an amazing adaptation for humans when we were still throwing spears and making primitive tools because it allowed us to perform more work and kill bigger prey. Today, it presents us with the problem of continually changing our exercise routines.

Who has the time to constantly figure out a new exercise program?

So we come to the gym and perform the same routine. Do the same exercises. Run the same speed for the same number of minutes.

And you probably still get sweaty and tired. But your body doesn’t change because it can do that routine easier than the first time you tried it.

But trying something different is tough. You don’t know if you’re doing the exercise right. Plus you are much better at the your current routine.

So you can keep doing what you’re doing, or you can save time and frustration by working with a trainer.

What would you do with that new found confidence? What if you you achieved the goals you set for yourself?
